Find a Friend v1.3

Let your friends locate you when you can’t use your phone.  When they  send you a text message containing the phrase “WhereRU”, your phone automatically responds with your location, heading, and speed using your phone’s GPS .  You choose who can find you from your Contacts list.  Only text messages from those phone numbers  will get an automatic response.  Find a Friend notifies you when it has sent your location to your friend.  Find a Friend won’t kill your battery if your GPS signal is too weak to lock.  It times out after 10 minutes and lets your friend know it couldn’t fix your location.  Be sure to enable GPS to run this app!

To Use Find a Friend …

Add friends to your list by clicking on the “Add a Friend” button.  Then select a person from the contact list.  Note that the list will show only mobile phone numbers.  Enable or disable a particular friend using the checkbox next to their name.  Only friends who are enabled will be able to locate you with this app.

When one of your friends sends a text containing the phrase “WhereRU”, Find a Friend will turn on the GPS, wait for it to find your location then send the address, heading, and speed back to the sender in a text message.  You will get a notification when your location is sent to a friend.  If your GPS is disabled, or the friend is disabled,  or your GPS can’t fix your location within 10 minutes, your friend will get a text message telling them so.  Your friend does not need to have this app or even a smart phone to find you.

To locate a friend (who does have this app), either send a text message with the phrase “WhereRU” or have Find a Friend send it by long clicking on the friend in your friends list.  When you get the message, tap (don’t long press) on the received text message.  You will see options to call them or map their location.

Updates for version 1.1

This app uses a web service to convert your location to an address.  Sometimes the service fails to return an address.  Added multiple attempts to obtain an address to avoid reporting only the latitude and longitude (or nothing). Also, added internet permission.  The internet is used only to get your address based on your location.

Updates for version 1.2

Fixed a problem on Droid X where the contact selection failed to return a result to the app.  Added a custom contact selection screen.  The new contact selection screen shows only mobile phone numbers.

Updates for version 1.3

Added license check.
